ZEISS Optical Coherence Tomography System (OCT)

The first of these state-of-the-art diagnostic units in Alberta was purchased by Dr. Uniat. She recognized the tremendous benefit to standard of care to her patients. Today every ophthalmologist and optometrist have a model of an OCT scanner, which has become a routine test in all offices.

After the first unit was purchased, Dr. Uniat gave numerous presentations on the use and effectiveness of the system to ophthalmologists and technicians in different parts of the country.

The images of the OCT provide a microscopic view of all the layers of the retina. This detailed analysis allows for accurate diagnosis and reliability in followup of patients.

The key benefits of the OCT in helping diagnose retina problems are:

  • the provision of instantaneous readings of retina damage;

  • more detailed information for physician analysis;

  • optimum reliability and accuracy for making diagnoses;

  • testing of retina damage without patients needing eye-drops; and

  • real-time computer screen images to assist in doctor-patient treatment discussions.
